Gaza stands on the Mediterranean ,at the crossroads of Asia, Africa, and Europe .In ancient times , it was therefore a very important point on one of the great trade
routes between the East and West . From the East traders brought incene and spies to Gaza by land .These goods then continued to Egypt and west by sea to Europe . Through this trade , Gaza became a rich and powerful city 2,500 years ago .

The journey to Gaza was long and dangerous . Traders used to take months to cross the hot Arabian desert . And to keep themselves safe from attack , hundreds travelled together in huge "caravans" At first , they used to carry their goods by donkey, but then they started carrying them by camel instead . These amazing "ships of the desert" could carry heavy loads for great distances, and they could continue without water for two whole weeks .

Why did the traders use to make these difficult journeys ? The answer is this : the goods that they carried were very valuable , and people paid a lo of money for them . From India they brought the finest spices for cooking . And from secret valleys in the south of Arabia they brought a type of incense with a wonderful , sweet smell. Egyptians , Greeks and Romans all loved burning it in their temples . This gave the route to Gaza its name :"the incense road . And the incense road made Gaza rich
and famous.

Today ,Gaza is not free , and it cannot reach out to the world . The 1948 catastrophe also forced over a million Palestinian refugees in to this very small area and made it one of the world's most crowded places , At this point in history, therefore, Gaza cannot be what it used to be. However , this is only one point in history, and Gaza remains as it always was – a sea port at the crossroads of three continents . One day, it will again be free and open to the world and again be a great city of trade and travel .
